The first session consists of evaluation, discussion and an abbreviated hands-on treatment. The goal of this session is to evaluate your muscle pain but most importantly to determine why you have this pain-the cause. We will discuss your lifestyle, including such things as sleep position, diet and activities/positions that you frequently do (ergonomics).
Anyone can push on muscles; determining the source of the pain and dysfunction and knowing where to treat is essential for long term relief. The source of low back pain, for example, is usually not in the back. It may be from several sources, the hip flexor muscles, your feet, or elsewhere in your body. The structure of your body has a significant effect on your muscles. Your body's structure will be evaluated for perpetuating factors or PFs. PFs will be explained to you and if there is an imbalance in your body's structure, you will be shown how to correct or minimize it. Your muscles will be checked for limited range of motion, weakness and pain. The process of MTPT and why it is so effective will be taught to you because you will be participating in this process; treating and stretching your muscles beginning with session 2. Beginning with session 2, the treatment will consist of evaluating how your are progressing, treatment of your muscles and teaching and/or reviewing how you will treat and stretch your muscles. This part of the session is called 'self-care' and it is essential for the success of the therapy. |
